BEWARE! SLOPPY TAX TALK SIMPLY DOESN’T CUT IT.
The "Singles Tax" has fierce descriptive power — it captures the very real financial disadvantage of living without a partner or children, from inflated travel costs to exclusion from tax concessions, super, social security, and aged care support. But as Donna Ward argues, calling it a tax is a strategic mistake. Drawing on a body of research across economics, sociology, and management studies, Donna shows that what single people face isn't a tax at all. It's a systemic penalty, woven through policy, workplace culture, and unpaid labour. And sloppy tax talk gives governments the perfect excuse to do nothing.
