Rallies are made for slogans. Or is it that slogans are made for rallies. Whatever the case, slogans are aimed to garner attention. If you’re lucky, it will get the attention of those in power. If you chant the slogan loud enough the system just might change. The "Singles Tax" has fierce descriptive power — it captures the very real financial disadvantage of living without a partner or children, from inflated travel costs to exclusion from tax concessions, super, social security, and aged care support. But as Donna Ward argues, calling it a tax is a strategic mistake. Drawing on a body of research across economics, sociology, and management studies, Donna shows that what single people face isn't a tax at all. It's a systemic penalty, woven through policy, workplace culture, and unpaid labour. And sloppy tax talk gives governments the perfect excuse to do nothing.
